Hampshire Telegraph - 17 May 1873 - NEWPORT - FUNERAL OF A MILITIA SERGEANT. - The funeral of Sergeant-Instructor McCartney, of the Isle of Wight Artillery Militia, took place at Carisbrooke Cemetery on Wednesday afternoon with military honours. The service at the grave was preformed by the Rev. Thomas Fryer, Roman Catholic priest. The deceased who, in the Royal Artillery and the Militia, had seen about 34 years' service, was much respected by his comrades of all ranks.
