Hampshire Advertiser – 4 January 1879 – Newport – AN INFANT SUFFOCATED. – On Wednesday evening at the Townhall, Mr. E.F. Blake, deputy coroner, held an inquest on view of the body of the infant twin daughter of James Meldrum, of South-street, labourer, who was born on Friday the 27th ult. The evidence went to show that the mother and two infant girls, apparently going on well, were left in bed on Wednesday morning and they went off to sleep, and about 11 a.m. it was found that deceased was suffocated, the mother probably having accidentally overlaid it. A verdict in accordance with the evidence was returned.
