IW Observer 1880. 24th January. The late Mr. John Hillier. The funeral of this well known and esteemed Island agriculturist took place at Carisbrooke cemetery on Friday last. A large number of persons from all parts of the Island assembled at Clatterford among whom were farmers, Highway Commissioners, the Master of Foxhounds, and a deputation from the Earl Yarborough Lodge of Oddfellows. Through Carisbrooke High Street there were marks of mourning and there was no doubting the sincerity of the tributes paid to the memory of a most useful public man and genial friend and neighbour. At the cemetery gates the cortege was joined by the Mayor of Newport and many others. Mr. John Lock of Newport conducted the funeral arrangements.
