DEATH OF AN ISLE OF WIGHT CENTENARIAN.
Interesting Recollections.
The death is reported of Mrs. Mary Clare Cecilia Gilliland, who has long resided at Broadlands House, Newport, and who in March last attained her 100th birthday.
Mrs. Gilliland remembered the Coronation and marriage of the late Queen Victoria, and she often talked about the events of those times.
She was of Irish extraction. Her father was a friend of the famous Daniel O'Connell. As a girl she could remember conversing with the great Irish leader.
Much of her married life was spent in India, where her husband was connected with the Civil Service. Together they passed through the horrors of the Indian Mutiny, of which she had a vivid recollection. Her husband pre-deceased her many years ago. She was very popular with the other ladies residing at Broadlands House.
