IWCP - 19 October 1918 - CARISBROOKE - ONE OF THE CONDOR’S CREW. – The death occurred on Wednesday at Priory-road, of Mr. Emanuel Gilbert, aged 75, for many years the much respected host of the Pointer Inn, Newchurch, and one who had seen considerable naval service. He had the distinction of serving on H.M.S. Condor, under the command of Admiral Lord Charles Beresford, when that vessel performed the daring and famous exploit of running up under the walls of Alexandria during the bombardment in 1882.
