IWCP – 6 January 1940 – NEWPORT – Quarryman’s Sudden Death. – The extreme cold on Wednesday doubtless accelerated the death of Mr. William Pointer, aged 72, of 24 Melbourne-street, a retired quarryman, who was employed for many years at the Cemetery-hill lime pit. He was on his way to his son’s house in Elm-grove at about 2 p.m., when he collapsed in Linden-road and was dead when Dr. C. K. Sylvester arrived. He was seen to stagger and fall by Mr. Aubrey Flux, who sent a message to the doctor, and he and Mr. A. Appel rendered assistance. As the deceased had been medically attended for heart trouble no inquest was necessary, Mr. Pointer leaves a widow and family of eight daughters and three sons. He was a quiet hard-working man, who was much esteemed.
