Hampshire Telegraph - 29 August 1857 - NEWPORT - An awful instance of the uncertainty of human life occurred on Sunday last in Crocker-street, where a female named Charlotte Leigh, a dress-maker, of the age of fifty-three, was seized with a sudden illness, and before medical aid could supply relief she was a corpse. Her death was attributed to apoplexy; but, since the refusal of the committee, appointed at the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace, to certify the claims of the County Coroners, where they considered an enquiry unnecessary, the latter have been exceedingly cautious in summoning a jury, and no inquest was held upon the above.
