Hampshire Advertiser - 16 November 1870 - Newport - FATAL ACCIDENT ON ST. GEORGE'S DOWN. - On Wednesday Mark Biles, aged 30, in the employ of Mr. Coker, the Island road contractor, was undermining in a gravel pit on St. George's Down, when the superincumbent mass gave way, and he was crushed. A fellow labourer, who managed to escape, set to work with others, and soon removed the soil, and got the poor fellow out of the pit. Mr. F.B. Tuttiett, surgeon, was soon on the spot, and found that life was extinct, and one of the thighs was broken. The next day Mr. E.F. Blake, deputy coroner, held an inquest on view of the body, at the Barley Mow, publichouse at Shide, and a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned. The jurors contributed to a fund which was being raised in aid of the deceased's widow and two children.
