Hampshire Independent - 18 July 1868 - NEWPORT - DEATH OF AN EX-POLICEMAN. - Our obituary of this day records the death, at the age of 47, of Mr. W. H. Stubbs, who was for 17 years a member of the borough police force. He resigned that position about three months since, failing health being the cause of his retirement. Before entering the police force he was a seaman for many years, and he had been several times shipwrecked. At a recent meeting of the Town Council he was granted a weekly allowance from the police superannuation fund.
Hampshire Independent - 22 July 1868 - NEWPORT - FUNERAL OF AN EX-POLICEMAN. - The funeral of the late ex-police constable Stubbs, for 17 years a member of the borough police force, took place at the Newport Cemetery on Saturday afternoon last. His remains were followed to the grave by P.C.'s Tiley, Jolliffe, Gray, and Salter, of the borough force, and P.C.'s Tarrant, Rapkins, and Hunt, of the county constabulary. The funeral ceremony was impressively performed by the Rev. W. H. Nutter, M.A., curate of Newport.
