IW Observer - 8 October 1864 - Newport - DEATH OF AN OLD FRIEND. - Just as we were going to press last week it was rumoured that Mr. Lambert - a well-known and highly respected "whip" on the road between Ryde and Newport for a quarter of a century - had died suddenly the day previously at Ventnor of heart disease. We hoped it was not true, so took no notice of the rumour, but are sorry to say it was confirmed. Mr. Lambert was so well known and appreciated as a kind and obliging gentleman in his calling that we are sure that as wide as this sheet may travel - whether in England or the Antipodes - that there will be a sigh of regret that another old friend has departed. He was buried in Newport cemetery on Wednesday, and the funeral cortege was swelled by sympathisers from all parts of the Island.
