Hampshire Independent - 11 January 1879 - NEWPORT - DEATH OF AN OLD INHABITANT. - We have to record the death of Mr. John Matthews, of Pyle-street, who passed away on Monday last at the ripe age of 88. The deceased lived the whole of his long life in Newport, maintaining throughout an honoured name and a blameless character, and commanding the sincere esteem of all who knew him.
