Lincolnshire Chronicle – 31 July 1874 – Arson at Billingborough – Samuel Crouch, 42, labourer, found guilty of setting fire to a hovel, shed and quantity of hay. The jury recommended mercy, the Lordship asked upon what grounds ? The Foreman responded ‘We don’t know.’ so withdrew the recommendation! The Lordship said there were 15 previous convictions (two for arson) against the prisoner and passed a sentence of 20 years’ penal servitude.
