IWCP 23 December 1922 - NEWPORT - EX-POLICE-SERGEANT'S DEATH - The death occurred on Tuesday, at Barton's-village, after a long illness, of Mr. Thomas Spanner, aged 80, one of the members of the old borough police taken over by the county, who retired as a sergeant many years ago, and who afterwards was the capable caretaker for many years of the Literary Society. He was a zealous worker in connection with the Rechabites, of which he was an old member. Much sympathy is felt with his wife, who has also been in failing health for some time, and the family in their bereavement.
