Barn at Bowcombe Farm About 70 Metres South West of Bowcombe Manor, Bowcombe Road, Carisbrooke

Description: Barn. Dated 1706 on north gable. Walls of coursed limestone and greensand rubble with roof now covered in corrugated iron.
About 50 metres long by 8 metres wide. Triangular ventilation slots and 3 cart entrances, the south eastern one added in C19. Central cart entrance blocked and all blocked to the rear. 12 bays. Angled queen-post roof with many reused timbers, 2 tiers of purlins, no ridgepiece and curved tension braces. Nearly half of the original rafters survive. The southernmost bay by the central cart entrance has had the tie beam sawn through and an adjoining purlin partially sawn through to insert C20 agricultural machinery. The southernmost truss has a C19 scientific kingpost.
